This is a Story between two teenagers suffering from CF. It stands for Cystic Fibrosis. A type of disease where the body of a person produces too much mucus. It’s terminal and the patients can’t touch each other. 6 feet. That’s the minimum distance that needs to be maintained between two patients with CF.
Stella Grant
Stella Grant is a control freak. That’s kind of her whole deal. She likes to be in control. Maybe because her lungs are totally out of her control. Her life revolves around following the rules. No exception. But someone challenges her way of living life. That’s be Will Newman.
Will Newman
Will Newman is the rebel. He hates rules. He hates being in treatment. Mostly because his mother kept taking him from one hospital to another in hopes for finding a treatment for him. He has B. cepacia. Its incurable. Lung transfer isn’t an option for him. So he lives his life the best way he could. And Stella hates it.
Them Stealing Back One Feet
Stella ad Will meet at the hospital. Stella, being the rule follower she is, hates the rulebreaker, Will. It keeps messing with her mind. She makes a deal with him. She’ll help him with his treatment and in return he’ll get to draw her.
Pretty sweet, right?
Thus they begin working on it. But then Stella falls sick due to an infection and needed to go through an operation.
This is where their relationship turns. Will begins to avoid Stella after getting a warning from the nurse.
Stella doesn’t take it sitting. She decides to take the initiative this time.
It’s something very sweet.
So, there’s this whole thing about there being at least 6 feet distance between fellow CF patients. So Stella offers to steal back 1 feet.
It was insanely sweet. Their relation gets closer, they enjoy their time together.
That is until they get caught having a party in the hospital canteen on Will’s birthday. And then, tragedy hits. Stella sneaks out from the hospital and pushes Will to join her. She wants to see the city lights
My Thoughts
While I was reading this book, I was really irritated with Stella in the beginning. But she grew on me pretty soon. Will on the other hand, was a pretty relatable character. When you know your disease will kill you and there’s no cure, you’ll want to live your life to the fullest. I would at the very least.
When the tragedy strikes, I had tears running down my cheeks. It was sad. Stella’s reaction to that incident was pretty devastating. And the end when Will leaves. I was halfway begging him to stay and I wasn’t even part of the book. It was beautiful in the sad way. The end of this book is literally the most touching part of this book.
But the whole book has beautiful and sad moments but the end of this book is what makes the heart stir. Subsequently, there’s another part where Stella falls into the icy cold lake. That part was pretty damn beautiful. Will’s desperation, his conviction to do anything to save Stella, it showed the testament of his feeling for her.
In the end, this book is Beautiful. In one word, beautiful.
