“The Sea of Monsters” is the second book in the series Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan.
The plot of this books is basically based on the Bermuda Triangle, which in fact is famous for missing ships and airplanes.
About the book
The book begins with the famous pine tree in Camp Half Blood getting poisoned. The pine tree of Thalia.
On the other hand, Percy finds himself with a new friend, Tyson. At first glance he looks human but later on his real identity is exposed.
It was a funny experience.
As Thalia’s tree starts dying, the protection around the summer camp starts weakening, resulting in more monster attack.
Thus begins the adventure to save the Thalia’s tree and their camp.
While I was reading it
During the whole story, I had to hold my breath. The adventure was that good.
I loved how Percy hated Tyson at first, embarrassed by his identity. That was such a perfect reaction from a 13 year old.
Moving on, Percy and Annabeth has to go to this particular adventure by breaking the camp rules, which is a nice character development for Annabeth.
This time, their adventure was in the sea, so basically Percy’s territory of expertise. And he proves it to us how good he is at the sea.
The fight scenes are so good it’s out of the world. Percy beats giant sea monsters.
They find Grover in a bride dress in Polyphemus’s island, along with the Golden Fleece.
I love this book quite a lot because of its exploration of new territory.
They also have some nice, sappy friendship moments. I more or less skipped a few of those.
Not my thing.
Overall, the story is awesome and something a kid can read for fun. But at the same time, It’s something even an adult can enjoy reading. The story has both fun materials and depth. There are some parts that hit different when you read it as an adult.
There was this part with the Sirens in the Sea of Monsters related to Annabeth. That scene felt dumb when I read it as a kid. But when i read it as an adult, I finally understood the depth of it.
Rick Riordan is an expert as inserting sass in a serious adventure story. And like the previous book, he didn’t disappoint.
